Overview: The first SIPQNP was hosted by Saikat Guha at BBN Technologies, with help of Zac Dutton (then Business Unit lead of BBN’s Quantum Information Processing group) and Rich Lazarus (Program Manager at BBN). Light is inherently quantum, and wherever photons are the bearer of information–be it in communications, sensing, imaging, spectroscopy, lidars, computing, etc.–fundamental limits of precision are governed by laws of quantum mechanics. The “quantum enhancement” possible (and hence its purported impact) varies widely across use cases and operational regimes. Identifying the highest impact use cases, and working towards scalable realizations of those will require a concerted interdisciplinary effort. The objective of this 1st SIPQNP workshop was to bring together a group of leading researchers spanning the fields of nano-photonics, optical physics, quantum optics, and quantum information, to brainstorm important research questions to realize quantum enhanced photonic information processing at scale. The workshop aims to develop a common language across these sub-communities, help set tangible goals, and provide an open forum for debates, discussions, and suggestions to help accelerate impactful progress.
